History
Hornchurch has a rich and fascinating history, dating back to the Roman era.
The town was predominantly an agricultural area with most of the inhabitants employed in farming. However, there was a considerable leather industry, there were skinners and tanners and even shoemakers based in Hornchurch although this industry died off at the beginning of the 19th century.

The area played a key role in the Second World War, with the famous RAF Hornchurch playing a vital role in the Battle of Britain. The RAF Hornchurch Heritage Centre is a must-visit for anyone interested in the history of the area, featuring displays and exhibits relating to the aerodrome and the pilots who flew from it.

Hornchurch has a few historic landmarks remaining, the most remarkable would-be St Andrews Church, from which the town’s name is likely to originate. The earliest record of St Andrews Church is from 1163 when the church and surrounding land were donated by Henry II to the Hornchurch Priory. The church tower was constructed in the 14th century, reportedly by William of Wykeham.
